Red Flags and Commitments by Jennifer Harris is a poetic confession of the inner troubles of the heart and the mind in regards to love. The beginning poem, "Warning", paints a perfect picture of what it is to experience deceit. As the story continues, Harris' vulnerability shows the readers how, by recognizing one's mistakes, we can claim our power back and cultivate a deeper sense of love for ourselves. Dhayana Alejandrina Red Flags and Commitments tells the story of a young woman falling in love with the red passion that fuels new love; from infatuation to desire to the validation that tints vision red and blinds us to the danger that lies beneath giving another human being too much control. The reader is walked through the journey of realizing the void beginning to form in her sense of self as the only way to close that void is to pour into it and heal. The second half is representing the commitment that one has to make to themselves being the first step on the healing journey. I appreciate the alternation between "I" and "you" in this section. It places the reader in the position of healing in the poems as it allows the affirmations to be for self and to be spread like seeds in others.
