John Cullen (see volume 1), now 100 years old, has passed his old watch onto a young man named Gabriel, a shy boy with a troubled background. John says he has no further use for the watch but thinks that it may be of assistance to Gabriel. John has explained to Gabriel that the device is a time-machine, left there by accident in 1945 by a long-dead time-traveller. He says that bits of the time-machine's functionality work, and others don't. He thinks that it may be of use to Gabriel.
