I've never been a genre writer. I follow wherever a good story leads, whether it's to medieval Norway or to an irradiated, modern Jerusalem, to lions feeding in South Africa or to a group of paper boys thwarting an alien invasion. That said, here's the contradiction: I'm three novels into the dark fantasy genre (did he say genre?) The story needs multiple books, because it's big! In a world where superstition is rapidly extinguishing the light of reason, magic arrives and sets huge events in motion. Will magic enable humans to build a better future or lead them to self-destruction? It is, as they say, a time for heroes. My professional brand has been Writer Viking for over forty years of advertising and fiction writing. My mantra is "WriterViking: Words without mercy." I grab my readers and haul them through my stories until they're panting at the end, and wanting more.Nobody ever showed me mercy.
Nothing teaches a writer discipline like ad deadlines and brutal clients. One client had his daughter who was "good in English" at 14 critique my writing. Lemme tell ya, that's tough. Decades in that hell have made me merciless, John the Merciless, in fact.See my online portfolio at johngrahamwriterviking.com.
