Excerpt from Religion and Modern Thought The Essays which make up this volume were written at different times and for various occasions during recent years. Four of them have already appeared in print. The one on 'The Influence of Kant on Religious Thought' was originally published in the Hibbert Journal under the title 'What do Religious Thinkers owe to Kant?' The first part of the article on 'Religious Experience and Theological Development' was published in the American Journal of Theology, and that on 'The Problem of the Personality of God' in the same magazine under its new title of the Journal of Religion. The essay on 'Theological Doctrines and Philosophical Thought' was one of the papers issued in connexion with the Quincentenary of St. Andrews University. Thanks are due to the respective editors for permission to republish these articles. As these essays were not originally written as parts of a systematic treatise, it has not been possible to avoid some slight repetition where the subjects discussed touched on one another.
