Excerpt from U. S. Stories: Regional Stories From the Forty-Eight StatesOnly twelve stories could be used in the magazine series and many readers were disappointed because all of the forty - eight states had not been included. Therefore, the editors of this volume set to work search ing out stories for every state in the union. Each story has been chosen, not because it was written byan author who happened to be born in a certain state, or because it may have been the best ever written in that state from a purely literary standpoint, but be cause it gives the flavor, the feeling of life in the state as lived by its people. A second qualification is needed here. In choosing a story like Bright and Morning Star, by Richard Wright, the editors do not mean to imply that life in Tennessee is limited to lynching any more than in selecting Dawn of Remembered Spring do they mean to suggest that all of life in Kentucky is represented by a boy out killing snakes. What we have tried to do is present a vivid facet of life in a state, rather than embrace the Whole.
