KIle, the 19-year-old Rookie of the Year in the International Basketball Organization's Cleveland team, the Calipers who play in Richfield, which is actually much closer to Akron, meets a pretty, white coed, Ashley, also 19, at a local mall, and they engage in an interracial romance. Kile's buddy, LaDodge, is the controversial superstar of the league. LD as he's known later joins Kile's team. Kile is also acquainted iwth Abbey, Ashley's roommate and confidant, and they later get together under tragic circumstances. Kile and LD's teammate, Wally, helps influence Kile and Ashley to want to move to Claifornia since she's from the snowbelt on the Lake Erie shore. When Wally encounters a tragdy himself, it influences KIle, LD and their friend Eric (as a coach) to all join a Los Angeles team. LD encounters many scandals, some of them sexuall, along the way as he continues to pile up championships while Kile encounters his true calling as he uses the Olympic tour a vehicle for his spiritual enlightenment. Wally's real character, a blond, blue-eyed, motor-cycle-riding, guitar-playing surfer with the athleticism of a black player.
