Universities have been radically restructured following the advent of neoliberalism, but what is the psychological impact of these changes on those at the neoliberal university? Drawing on personal experiences and international examples, Fleming argues that there is a significant link between the neoliberalization of higher education over the last 20 years and the psychological hell now endured by its members.Throughout the book, Fleming explores themes such as the individualisation of mental illness in the university setting; the psychological effects of hierarchies within the neoliberal university on workers and students; and the usage of metrics and 'impact' as tools to discipline workers. Written in a theoretically rigorous yet personable and accessible style, Fleming asks why academia so seldom fights back choosing instead to internalize the painful realities of the modern university. In an exercise of auto-critique, Fleming does not cast academics as powerless victims but criticises the political praxis of those in the neoliberal university.
