In 1965 US ground troops clashed with North Vietnamese regular troops for the first time in Vietnam, in the Ia Drang Valley. Immortalised in the book (and later movie) We Were Soldiers Once .And Young, the events at Landing Zone X-Ray have passed into legend. Less than two years later Captain Robert H. Edwards, commander of C Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) recorded his experiences of the battle at LZ X-Ray. His report, written for the US Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia, covers the preparations of the battalion for its airmobile assault, a full account of the combat, as well as interesting analyses and criticisms, and a 'lessons learned' section. The text is accompanied by a number of maps, charts and tables.
