Description of "Annie Rose", a novel. Set on Block Island, Rhode Island, the Island home of Annie Rose and her younger sister Emma, and Washington, DC, Annie Rose is equal parts mystery, adventure, WW1 historical fiction, and international espionage. The novel was inspired by multiple true stories. It's early 1917. On the Army War College campus in Washington, DC, Major Ralph Van Deman struggles to develop his Military Intelligence Service. On Block Island, R.I. an unlikely candidate waits for an offer to serve with the Office of Naval Intelligence.
Against all odds, Annie Rose, our 22-year-old protagonist with a significant acquired disability, is determined to contribute to the war effort, but if selected, will she overcome obstacles her physical disability presents. Annie Rose, an acute observer of everything, explores issues encountered by America's fledgling 1917 intelligence community: Learning cryptanalysis, identifying spies in the ranks, understanding the true story of the Zimmermann Telegrams, and exploring contributions and unrecognized influences of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service. The novel also uncovers the forgotten influence of the SIS's Claude Dansey. Through the actions and behaviors of Annie, her younger sister Emma, and the men at the Army War College, the novel reveals various aspects of disability culture. Navigating the intrigues of espionage is difficult enough but the challenges faced by our female protagonist at the Army War College is as formidable, if not more so.
