Paul Davies was brought up in Bargoed, a mining town in the South Wales Valleys. At the age of 16, he joined the army and the Royal Welch Fusiliers. At 18 years old, he served in Northern Ireland at the height of the "Troubles" and during the Hunger Strikes of 1981. Following further service in Germany, Canada, and Denmark, he suffered a life-changing injury whilst playing rugby for his Regiment in Warminster, leaving him paralysed from the chest down and confined to a wheelchair. In 1989 he was introduced to the sport of wheelchair rugby and was an integral part in forming the first-ever wheelchair rugby team in Wales and developing the sport within the UK. After playing wheelchair rugby at all levels, he went on to become the Team Manager of the Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby Paralympic Team at the Sydney Paralympics 2000. Following this, he became the Manager of the Great Britain Development Unit and helped promote the sport throughout the UK. In 2002 he was involved in the first ever-integrated World Friendship Tour between GB Wheelchair Rugby and Haslemere RFC.

A group of 50 able-bodied and wheelchair rugby players went on tour to the USA, Singapore, Australia, and South Africa. He retired from the sport in 2005. Paul is currently serving as a Justice of the Peace (Magistrate) for the Mid Wales District on the Merthyr Tydfil Bench. He has been the Branch Secretary of his Veterans' Association, the Royal Welch Fusiliers Comrades Association/Royal Welsh Association, for 22 years. He is also actively involved with the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust and a Trustee of his local YMCA. Paul was awarded an MBE in the 2011 New Year's Honours list for services to charities and wheelchair rugby. He still lives in Bargoed with his wife, Lorraine.
