In the 1980s Allen Counter -- a neuroscientist at Harvard University and a longtime admirer of Matthew Henson, the African American who codiscovered the North Pole with Robert Peary -- heard rumors that Peary and Henson fathered sons with Eskimo women while in the Arctic. Counter arranged a visit to the remote Greenland villages where Peary and Henson had stayed, and to his astonishment quickly discovered the living sons of Henson and Peary. North Pole Legacy tells the amazing story of Counter's deepening friendship with the families of Anaukaq Henson and Kali Peary. As Counter's story crosses paths with that of Matthew Henson, Counter reexamines what we know about Peary's journey to the pole, in light of the new information provided by the Eskimo, who still sing songs and tell stories about Henson. To the Eskimo, Henson was the true hero, for he was the only one on the expedition who knew how to make the sleds, hunt for food, and speak the Eskimo tongue.
