IntroductionI wrote my first four bilingual memoirs composing first in Spanish and translating each essay to English. It seemed much easier to me as I could translate the Spanish to English almost instantaneously and so it saved time. Because of that, however I have lamented in previous memoir introductions that I feared this practice might have resulted in a lower quality essay in English since my Spanish isn't nearly as good as my English. Accordingly, I've decided this time to first write them all in English and see what happens. I'm halfway through this fifth bilingual memoir as I now write and I must say that it doesn't seem very much harder to do it this way. Perhaps I've worried unnecessarily as a quick look through my earlier memoirs doesn't leave me with the impression that the essays in English leave very much to be desired in the way of literary style and it is a relief to have come to that conclusion.Years ago I used to go to open mic nights and singer/guitarists would wait their turn and when they finally took the stage they'd always tell the long suffering audience the life story of any song they were about to perform: "I wrote this song when I got mugged in Juarez, Chihuahua and they took all my money and my huaraches as well. I had been having the most wonderful time when suddenly.
" I always wished they'd let the song do the talking as I immediately grew impatient with the unwelcome introduction.And so perhaps it is with this introduction.
