Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887-1918), an artist who consecutively tried his hand at Impressionism, Fauvism, Futurism, Cubism and Expressionism, was a pioneer not only for modern art in his home country, Portugal, but for Abstractionism all across Europe. Friends with Amedeo Modigliani, Diego Rivera, and Gaudí, he constantly merged tradition and modernism, thus developing a virtuous and unique style; his seemingly chaotic arrangements only revealing their inherent structure upon closer inspection. The Spanish flu put an abrupt end to this rising star of European avant-garde creativity whose impact on the history of art has yet to be fully uncovered.
