Whether Marshland, and the Pen lands in Holland and the isle of Ely, were originally a part of the ocean which the waters providentially left, or that this ex tensive plain was at some time swallowed up by an inundation from the sea and afterwards drained, or otherwise cleared, admits of a doubt; more especially as the most learned writers on the subject have differed in opinion.
