This textbook is an introduction to generative phonology for undergraduate students. It falls naturally into two parts. The first part takes the reader from phonemic analysis to the standard model of generative phonology. An interlude raises a series of questions about the standard model, which the second part seeks to address, thus introducing contemporary theoretical issues. Phonology is exercise-based: each chapter contains end-of-chapter exercises, and in the first half of the book, in-chapter exercises are included which require the student to apply the ideas introduced. The book requires no previous knowledge of phonology. It assumes a knowledge of elementary articulatory phonetics and contains a brief review of phonetic terminology and symbols.
