The Effects of Unemployment Compensation on the Employment of Youths
This report examines the role of unemployment insurance (UI) policies on the amount of unemployment that youths experience between jobs. Specifically, the analysis focuses on determining how the weekly benefit amounts and the weeks of eligibility offered by UI programs influence 3 aspects of non-employment activities: the total length of time spent in non-employment; the fraction of this time reported as unemployment; and the likelihood that an individual collects UI during a non-employment episode. Also develops a picture of youths¹ participation in the labor market. Charts and tables.
