Excerpt: .on sixth, fifth, fourth, third and second floors, with a stairway twenty-one inches wide in the clear, eighth-inch rise and eighth-inch tread between each balcony, and from the first balcony above the ground a stairway as mentioned above to come down to within ten feet of ground, there to have a landing at least two feet long resting on a bracket solidly anchored through wall with sixinch washer and nut on inside, at landing an iron ladder of sufficient length to reach the ground at an easy angle, same to be held up by counterbalance weight; from top balcony an iron ladder made rigid to same and to extend to roof of building. (Cleveland), June 19, 1900--In Valley Mill building, put in three one and one-fourth inch round iron rods just inside of east wall, one near roof, one close to third floor and one near second floor, each rod to pass entirely through both walls with large washers on each end so nuts can be drawn up tightly.
