This book is concerned with the social aspects of army life rather than with its strategy and tactics. Broadly expressed its aim it to answer three questions. First, what do British people think about their Army, along what lines are their attitudes likely to develop, and what type of army might be acceptable to British society? Second, how is the Army to be kept keen?; how can its operational efficiency and enthusiasm be maintained in times of prolonged peace, and what conditions of service and career opportunities can it offer? Third, who will join?; will there be enough men and women of the right ages and abilities available to meet the Army's requirements, and how can the right ones be attracted to join?.
