John Barth jr. was born in Maryland, the son of the novelist John Barth. He spent his childhood in rural Pennsylvania, attended MIT to pursue strong interests in artificial intelligence, and became absorbed in international relief efforts. He moved to rural Maine to establish a nonprofit school, and has written novels, articles on sailing, and essays and articles on public policy and government reform, as well as numerous engineering papers. He lives in Maine and Florida.
