Caroline Arnold began a successful and prolific career as a children's author over 25 years ago. Although her training was as an artist, and her original plan was to illustrate her own books, the nonfiction science topics she writes about lend themselves to photographic illustrations instead. This new series titled Caroline Arnold's Animals is illustrated with cut paper illustrations by the author, giving the books a unique look compared with other animal books written for children that use photographs. A Zebra's World is 24 pages long and is written for children ages 5-9. The book follows the life of a zebra foal from her birth on the African plains to one year of age. Boxed facts on several pages expand the concepts presented in the associated section. In addition, a map, "fun facts," a glossary, an index, a short list of further readings, and references to Web sites are provided. The text was reviewed for accuracy by advisers at the San Diego Zoo.
This book, as well as other titles in the series, can be enjoyed by older children alone or can provide the basis for a read-to-me learning experience for younger children. I recommend A Zebra's World highly for public libraries.
