The Suppliants is one of the best political plays by Aeschylus. The 50 Danaids flee their homes to escape a forced marriage. They turn to king Pelasgus to protect them, but he will not do so unless Argos' citizens agree. The play reflects the growing power and sentiment of democracy in Athens at the time of writing.
