As a bounty hunter Jim Billings was one of the best. His father's people drew him into the world of the white man but the Apache blood of his mother caused him to become a loner, in that world bringing him only loneliness. When he was not hunting men Jim kept to the backwoods away from people and towns. It was there in the foothills of the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming that Jim found his greatest and last wild chase; it also put an end to his days as a lonely man.
