Anders Zorn (1860-1920) is one of Sweden's most accomplished and beloved artists. Zorn's breakthrough came as a watercolourist. With his feeling for the light, expressive characteristics of watercolours he attained mastery of the genre at an early age and later applied these techniques to oil painting. His travels as a young man introduced an exotic element to many of his works. When Anders Zorn's name is mentioned in the United States, it is usually in connection with John Singer Sargent and JoaquĆn Sorolla y Bastida, contemporaries who also were known for their portraits of high-society figures. Taking up residence in London and then in Paris, Zorn established himself as an international portrait painter, depicting fashionable clients in a style both elegant and relaxed. He later became a favorite among wealthy American collectors, bankers, and industrialists who sat for him, including art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner and three U.S.
presidents (Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, and William Taft). In addition to his portraits and to genre scenes, Zorn brought equal skill to painting scenes from nature. The accompanying catalogue will provide an introduction to the artist and the full range of his works, from portraiture to landscapes and his famous nudes. Four illustrated essays will provide a full examination of the artist. Also included in this volume is a chronology, selected bibliography, capsule biographies of related figures throughout Anders Zorn's career, a checklist, and an index.
