The book presents an evaluation of the management of economic policy of Pakistan and the role played by economists and bureaucrats-turned economists in shaping it.This has been done by dividing the whole period in seven decades starting with the early/formative decade and ending with current and ongoing decade. An effort has been made to ascertain that, apart from chief executives, who else were the artichtects of economic policies framed and implemented in different decades and what was the extent of their relative influence. How far ideology versus pragmatism shaped up their ideas? This is contained in part 1.The part 2 discusses evolution of the Profession of Economics from the inception of Pakistan in 1947 to the present times. The role played by different institutions, institutes, associations, postgraduate departments of the universities, agencies, research journals etc. has been analysed and well documented. The Part 3 presents brief profiles of all major Pakistani economists working inside as well as outside the country.

Those working inside are drawn from universities, research institutes, and financial institutions like State Bank of Pakistan. Those working outside were mainly concentrated in international financial institutions such as International bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), International Monetary Fund (IMF), International Labor Organization (ILO), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Islamic Development Bank (IDP) and Asian Development Bank (ADP). Others hailed from universities in Europe and USA. A number of them settled abroad while others returned to Pakistan after their retirement. The study revealed certain little known and unsung economists like Raana Liaqat Ali, Anwar Ali, Hanif Ramay and Najam Sethi who made significant contribution in their respective fields. An overwhelming number of all economists surveyed possessed the degree of PhD in Economics but a few have also been included with M.Sc. Degrees with an impressive record of service to the nation and the economy.
